What does a Platelet Rich Plasma hair (PRP) treatment do?
A platelet-rich plasma (PRP) hair treatment is performed by injecting a person's platelet rich plasma that contains the body's own growth factors into the scalp. This stimulates hair growth and rejuvenates the scalp. The platelets that are used in the treatment are drawn from the patient and then placed into a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the platelets. This increases the concentration of platelets to three times the normal amount. When the platelet rich plasma is injected into the scalp, the body recognizes it and allows it to begin to rejuvenate the tissues and help to regrow hair in follicles that have started to slow hair production.
Are there side effects?
Platelet rich plasma offers fewer side effects than many other types of treatment. While the science of the treatment works in theory, it is still being studied. What studies have been performed suggest that, over time, platelet rich plasma hair treatments may be increasingly more effective. Because the plasma rich platelets used in the treatment come from the patient's own body, there is less risk of a reaction. The procedure also offers very little risk of infection. The treatment area may be somewhat sensitive the first few hours after a treatment, but this will eventually dissipate. The area may also be warm to the touch and slightly inflamed.
How many times does a procedure need to be performed?
Many patients choose to have the procedure performed every three to four months to ensure the rate of growth continues. In most cases, the patient determines the frequency of the procedures. This allows them to choose whether to maintain a specific level of hair growth, increase hair growth or allow it to gradually decrease. The doctor will be able to offer advice as to the frequency of the procedures once it is observed how the patient will respond to the treatment. If the response rate is slow, the doctor may recommend performing the procedure more frequently to ensure the patient receives the amount of hair growth they desire.
